NI/Ettus Research ZBX USRP Daughterboard
The ZBX USRP daughterboard is a RF module which is designed for advanced software-defined radio applications. The daughterboard supports 2 transmit and 2 receive channels by providing simultaneous bidirectional communication for MIMO operations. The board frequency coverage spans 1 MHz to 8 GHz by accommodating a wide variety of wireless protocols. The module delivers a maximum bandwidth of 400 MHz by enabling high-throughput signal acquisition and transmission for experiments. The daughterboard features a gain range from 0 to 60 dB, allowing precise control over both transmit and receive paths.
Each channel allows independent control of transmit and receive operations for experimental and research applications. The wide frequency range ensures compatibility with low- and high-frequency RF systems. The receiver gain is limited to 0 to 38 dB for frequencies below 500 MHz to preserve signal fidelity. The on-board CPLD provides additional flexibility for custom hardware configurations. Maximum output power reaches 23 dBm depending on the frequency while the maximum input power rating is 0 dBm during normal operation.
The ZBX USRP Daughterboard integrates a dual-LED status system for each channel to indicate operational states. The TX/RX0 LED shows transmission and reception whereas the RX1 LED signals only reception. Green LEDs indicate active reception while red LEDs on TX/RX0 indicate transmission. Both LEDs remain off when the port is inactive by providing real-time monitoring of each channel’s activity. The power calibration is managed through the UHD power API by enabling immediate use without manual adjustment. Nominal calibration data ships with the device helps in ensuring reference power levels are accurate from the start. Dual HDMI connectors enable external GPIO access, allowing for integration with peripheral devices and custom interfaces.
The daughterboard includes USB-C ports for debugging and OTG connectivity, supporting console access and USB 2.0 communication. The memory consists of four gigabytes of DDR4 RAM for the processor system and two gigabytes of DDR4 RAM for programmable logic. Thermal management is provided through closed-loop temperature control by maintaining optimal conditions under heavy load. By default, the ZBX USRP daughterboard uses front-to-back airflow, and the field-replaceable fan tray makes maintenance easier. Timed tuning of local oscillators is supported though the X410 does not allow NCO tuning at a specific time.
