Astronics PXIe-3352 PXI Synchronization Module
The PXIe-3352 (Part Number: 785034-01) developed by Astronics for National Instruments is a PXI synchronization module based on rubidium that was built to provide precise timing for test and measurement devices from PXI and other test equipment suppliers. The module provides a 10 MHz sine wave, a 10 MHz square CMOS clock signal, and a timing pulse output of 1 pulse per second (1 pulse per second) with low phase noise and great spectral purity that make it suitable for frequency critical applications. The rubidium oscillator is disciplined to satellite time through an internal GPS receiver providing great long-term stability and fast reacquisition after power loss.
The PXIe-3352 consists of a rubidium frequency standard, an internal GPS receiver that has 22 tracking channels and hot, warm, and cold acquisition modes, SMA connectors, front panel placed, for the sine wave, square wave, 1 pulse-per-second and for GPS antenna input, external 12 V. DC input for allowing power during loss of the rack operating the rubidium oscillator, and multiple LEDs on the front panel indicating system faults, access activity, and rubidium lock state. It has VXIplug&play drivers available giving support for 32- and 64-bit operating systems for Windows, compatibility with LabVIEW and LabWindows/CVI programming environments, and a control program for configuration and diagnostics.
When engineers want exact synchronization, low package jitter, and holdover ability, they turn to the PXIe-3352. Applications for the module normally include RF and satellite test benches, synchronization of wireless base stations, time and frequency laboratory metrology, high speed data acquisition, and calibration facilities. GPS disciplining gives the module a 1 PPS timing accuracy in the range of tens of nanoseconds, and with the rubidium holdover, frequency stability, enables operation of it for long term reliable continuous operation in case of GPS outages.
The PXIe-3352 will consume two PXI Express slots, get power from + 3.3 V and +12 V power rails, meet environmental specification for operating temperature, humidity, shock and vibration, and is designed to CE specifications for emissions and safety. Its means of power, unit space, built-in GPS, external power option, and diagnostics interface make its integration into complex automated test and measurement systems feasible.
