National Instruments PXI-6650H Timing and Synchronization Module

The PXI-6650H (part number: 783785-01) is a timing and synchronization module manufactured by National Instruments. It is a custom module from the PXI-665x series of products and can also be found under the model names PXI-6650 and NI 6650H. It is the size of a standard single-slot 3U PXI module and the front panel features 4 SMB connectors. Built for precision, this module is an excellent choice for a wide range of timing and synchronization applications.

The four connectors on the front panel of the device are labeled “CLKOUT”, “PFI 1”, “PFI 2”, and “PFI 3”. These PFI (Programmable Function Interface) connectors are incredibly adaptable. These are used to route triggering and timing signals between several PXI chassis or devices. Depending on the requirements of your system, you can program each individual PFI line to function as either an input or an output.

There is a 10 MHz reference clock on the PXI-6650H, equipped with an oven-controlled crystal oscillator (OCXO). The long-term stability of the OCXO measures ±50 ppb/year, and the recommended calibration interval is one year. The optimal operating temperature range for the device measures ±80 ppb, achieving the desired accuracy when operated within one year of calibration. A sealed oven with a resistive heating houses the OCXO oscillator circuit. An automated feedback circuit precisely regulates the temperature, minimizing errors.

The output of the PXI-6650H’s OCXO clock is highly stable, allowing it to replace the native frequency reference clock that is on the module backplane when it is installed in a PXI chassis. When external devices need to be synchronized, the signal of the 10 MHz OCXO can be directly routed out of the CLKOUT connector. This timing and synchronization module also features a Xilinx Virtex-5 FPGA. This FPGA has a total block RAM of 2,160 kbits and a maximum distributed RAM of 480 kbits.

The environmental specifications of the PXI-665x series include an operating temperature range of 0°C to 55°C with a noncondensing humidity range of 10% to 90%. When not in use, the recommended storage temperature range is -20°C to 70°C with a humidity range of 5% to 95%.
