The NI USB-232/4 (Part Number: 778473-04) is a 4-Port Serial Interface Device. This device is designed to transform a standard USB port into 4 standard serial ports. The USB 2.0 connector on this device is a B-type plug. The four serial ports can be accessed through separate DB-9 male connectors. This Serial Interface Device is bus-powered and relies on the power supplied by the USB serial bus. Thus, you are not required to acquire an additional power supply to operate your NI USB-232/4. You can use this device with a broad range of computer programs and applications that use standard COM ports.
The National Instruments USB-232/4 Serial Interface Device is designed to be hosted by a regular personal computer operating on Microsoft Windows. In the Windows environment, this device appears like a hardware serial communication port. The front panel of the NI USB-232/4 has various LEDs to keep you informed and updated about the current state of the device on a real-time basis. The solid and robust casing of this Serial Interface Device enables it to operate in typical industrial environments and in conditions where the regular cable-only type of interfaces does not last long. The USB-232/4 Serial Interface Device is known for its reliable performance and accuracy. Moreover, you can choose to operate this device in either DCE or DTE mode through software. In typical conditions, the NI USB-232/4 draws around 300 mA of current from its host USB bus, and up to 500 mA at +5 VDC. Since it is a USB powered device, it does not come with a separate power cable or power jack.
