National Instruments PXI-8512/2 PXI CAN Interface Module
The PXI-8512/2 (Part Number: 780687-02) is a Flexible Data-Rate, High-Speed CAN Interface Module with 2 ports. This module has a CAN bus, 40 kbits/s minimum baud rate, and does not have an external sync connector. The NI PXI-8512/2 PXI CAN Interface Module needs a few accessories for operation. One cable and one connector block are needed. The connector block it can be used with is the CAN Breakout Box, part number 780041-01. The cable this module can be used with is a 9-pin D-SUB female NI CAN Single Termination Cable. The cable is 2 meters long and has the part number 192017-02 associated with it. The device is equipped with a 9-pin male DSUB I/O connector for each of its 2 ports. The High-speed CAN module has a NXP TJA1041/TJA1043 transceiver, with maximum and minimum baud rates of 1 Mbps and 40 kbps respectively.
Like the other modules that are members of the NI-XNET platform, the National Instruments PXI 8512/2 module is well-suited for applications that involve real-time, high-speed manipulation of hundreds of CAN frames and signals. Several of the application types the module will work well for include: bus monitoring, hardware-in-the-loop simulation, automation control, and rapid control prototyping. This PXI CAN Interface Module utilizes DC-to-DC converters and galvanic isolation to keep the module safe from transient voltages and ground loops. Isolations aids in stopping failures often related to a variety of ground planes that often occur in test equipment setups. The isolation voltage for the NI PXI 8512/2 is 500 VDC and the isolation type is channel-to-bus and channel-to-channel. It has a power requirement of 640 mA at +5 VDC and 940 mA at +3.3 VDC.
The software-selectable termination options for the PXI-8512/2 module are either none or 120 Ω. In addition, this module does not have any external bus power requirements because V- is used as the reference ground. The NI device weighs 3.6 oz, and measures 3.9 x 6.3 in. in physical dimensions. It has a recommended operating temperature range of 0 °C to 55 °C, and a storage temperature range of -20 °C to 70 °C.
