A serial interface enables the user to connect and control external serial hardware, e.g., terminals, modems, and various other devices using asynchronous serial interfaces which support a variety of protocols. Modern serial interface cards have less fault rates, consume less power, and have high data rates.
The NI AT-232/4 Serial Interface can be used as a plug-in card which connects any computer to other serial devices. Each port connects the host equipment to the DTE (Data Terminal Equipment) or DCE (Data Communication Equipment) via registered jacks (RJ45) or modular phone jacks (10-position). The AT-232/4 is compatible with Windows 2000/9x. The AT-232/4 also interrupts sharing between the ports. This serial interface offers an optimum current range of 340 mA to 450 mA at 5V.
A Recommended Standard 232 (RS-232) interface can be used to run the AT-232/4 adapter. To certify error-free decoding of the data at the receiver’s side, the AT-232/4 includes RTS/CTS hardware-handshake lines. The AT-232/4 can be powered on via a USB port; therefore, it doesn’t require any external power. The NI AT-232/4 enables bi-directional data transfer by providing a full-duplex RS-232 port. ISA (Industry Standard Architecture) bus connects to the AT-232/4 adapter. The AT-232/4 has FIFO depth/size of 16B which implies the requirement of 16B of data for buffering. The humidity operating range of the NI AT-232/4 is 10% to 90%.
