The PXIe-SMU5101 Bundle (Part Number: 867111-03), manufactured by National Instruments, is a PC-based test solution that combines a high-performance PXIe Source Measurement Unit (SMU) in a modular chassis. The bundle includes a 5-slot PXIe-1083 PXI Chassis and a single-channel 40-Watt PXIe-4139 PXI Source Measurement Unit. In addition, a Thunderbolt cable and power cable are included to set up the unit immediately and allow laptop control of the unit via Thunderbolt 3. The system is engineered for high channel density so that all of the instruments can be reduced to a single compact unit to offer minimum benchtop volume.
The precision of this SMU bundle is excellent, with current sensitivity as low as 100 fempto amps and 4-quadrant operation. Key electrical specifications of the product include a usable voltage of ±60 V, a total of 40 W of DC power, and a DC current range of ±3 A. To meet dynamic tests, it also offers the high power pulsing capability of a pulsed current in the ±10 A range and an excellent pulsed power capability of 500 W, permitting the testing of the device at high instantaneous power with no extra heat sinking. Further, the integrated chassis PXIe-1083 has four additional slots, enabling easy expansion of the system with other PXIe instruments to such multitasking devices as digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, or multiplexers. The synchronization of the different instruments is made easy by the chassis backplane distributing timing and trigger signals to all the mounted modules.

The engineers can access the interactive method of controlling the system using the no-code InstrumentStudio software for debugging and data visualization, or the programming languages of Python, C, and LabVIEW may be considered for developing automated test sequences.
