National Instruments PXIe-6321 Multifunction I/O Module
The PXIe-6321 (Part Number: 790590-01) manufactured by National Instruments is an advanced PXI Express multifunction I/O module for measurement and control applications. It integrates high-speed analog input, analog output, digital I/O, and counter/timer capabilities into a single-slot 3U unit. Designed as a central component in automatic testing equipment, laboratory research and industrial data acquisition environments, it takes advantage of the large throughput afforded by the PCI Express bus architecture to provide efficient system integration.
The module has 16 channels of analog input which can be configured for either single-ended or 8 differential measurements, a 16-bit resolution A/D converter, and a total sample rate of 250 kS/s maximum. It is designed to work in a variety of analog input ranges to allow flexibility in signal application. In addition to the analog inputs it has 2 independent channels of analog output, with 16-bit resolution, which can output signals to 900 kS/s in waveform generation. There are 24 channels of flexible digital control and sensing on board the PXIe-6321 for digital stimulus or sensing. The digital signals may be used for static I/O or high-speed buffered operations on certain ports, and programmable functions interface (PFI) signals, where they can be used to route timing signals for analog and counter operations.
An important unique capability of this module is in the four 32-bit general-purpose counter/timer functions built into it. These can be used for a number of applications including pulse width measurement, frequency measurement, event counting, and quadrature encoder interpretation for position sensing. The counters employ several different internal base clocks and allow the use of external clock sources to provide sufficient flexibility to perform complicated timing and positioning tasks. The PXIe-6321 affords a variety of triggering options and a device to device trigger bus to enable very complex synchronization of data acquisition into multiple module PXIe systems, affording coordinated data acquisition and generation throughout the chassis. This combination of digital, analog, and timing capabilities makes the PXIe-6321 a powerful device for developing complex automated testing and measurement systems.
