Ballard MIL-STD-1553 Interface Module
The Ballard MIL-STD-1553 interface module (part numbers: 784796-01, 784797-01, 784798-01, 784799-01, 784800-01, and 784801-01) provides a means for accurately and deterministically communicating over the MIL-STD-1553 data buses used in military, aerospace, and defense-related systems. MIL-STD-1553 is a command-response, time-division multiplexing based system that describes the data formats, handshaking, timing, and electrical specifications necessary for communication between a bus controller and multiple remote terminals. Each terminal will have a unique address, and communication is strictly initiated by the bus controller for maximum control and coordination of data transfer. All of the data words used are 16 bits in length, with a word transfer capability of one megabit per second. This data transfer rate supports a total of 32 words intended for command and/or status transfers in each message. Both broadcast messages and mode codes allow for system-wide operations.
The part numbers of the Interface Module differ in their function and number of channels. Part numbers 784796-01 (1 channel), 784797-01 (2 channels), and 784798-01 (4 channels) are all single function. On the other hand, part numbers 784799-01 (1 channel), 784800-01 (2 channels), and 784801-01 (4 channels) are all multifunction versions of the device.
The Ballard MIL-STD-1553 modules are offered as either single or dual channel units, and provide bus controller, remote terminal, or bus monitor capabilities. Each channel can be programmed separately to allow for flexible message scheduling, sub-address mapping, discrete functions, and PXI-triggered events. The independent channel control ensures timing and reliability for complex MIL-STD-1553 networks. The modules operate easily with PXI and embedded computer systems, and associated configurations can be easily handled with graphically-oriented LabVIEW tools provided by Ballard. The time involved in development will thus be substantially less, allowing the engineer to have an efficient means of handling MIL-STD-1553 communication.
The Ballard MIL-STD-1553 modules have been designed for use in test, simulation, and operational avionics environments, and provide timely and deterministic data transfer capabilities required in many military and aerospace applications. They are most ideally suited for the testing of aircraft systems, and for ground support equipment, and for operation in various embedded mission-critical systems that require reliability and the capability of maintaining accurate timing. The flexible and extensive variety of software available for the modules will allow the industry to define and implement many unique message schedules for bus controllers and remote terminals alike, for both 1553, and for new implementations.
