National Instruments RMC-8353 (NI 8353) Rack-Mount Controller
The National Instruments RMC-8353 (Part Numbers: 780062-01, 780062-33, 780062-02), also known by the model name NI 8353, is a 1U form factor remote controller that will act as the main computer in PXI and PXI Express systems. This Remote Controller is one of the most powerful units on the market today, containing an Intel Core 2 Quad processor that can provide a multi-core process environment to handle the demands of complex automated test and measurement applications. By separating the computing unit from the instrumentation cabinet, it provides greater flexibility to system integrators when developing high-performance rack-mounted solutions. In addition to providing multi-core processing capabilities, the server class design of this unit also supports long term data transfer and reliability in applications such as manufacturing test stations and data intensive validation laboratories.
The difference between the different part numbers is their operating system. Part number 780062-01 uses Windows XP, part number 780062-02 has Windows Vista, and part number 780062-33 utilizes a Real-Time SW.
One of the key features of this controller is the ability to have the storage unit integrated into the controller itself, allowing for two or four SATA II hard drives to be connected to each other using a standard RAID 0 configuration, which would allow for fast data streaming. This type of configuration is very important to applications that write large amounts of data directly to the hard drive as not to experience a bottleneck in performance. The unit has an empty expansion slot to install an MXI-Express or MXI-4 interface card that will establish a high-speed, transparent connection between the NI 8353/RMC-8353 controller and a PXI chassis. This adapter will enable the NI 8353/RMC-8353 controller to directly access all modules located in the chassis as if they were local to the controller. In addition to the expansion slot, onboard connectivity exists, consisting of two Gigabit Ethernet ports and several USB ports, making it easier to integrate with network resources and peripherals.
This controller was designed to be used in a 19-inch wide standard rack mount enclosure, reducing the amount of space required in densely populated system enclosures. It also has built-in support for up to 4GB of DDR2 RAM and comes with the necessary operating system pre-installed, both of which reduce the amount of setup time and accelerate the development cycle of new applications. A dedicated version of this controller is available for use by engineers that require specific timing and deterministic behavior; it comes pre-configured with the LabVIEW Real-Time operating system.
