National Instruments 780683-02 CAN Interface Device
The part number 780683-02 from National Instruments is the identifying part number for the PCI-8512-2 CAN Interface Device. The basic purpose of a CAN Interface Device is to enable ECU to communicate with other ECUs without the need for complex wiring and use a two-wire design known as CAN Low that has a minimum voltage rating of -27 Volts DC and CAN High with a maximum voltage rating of +40 Volts DC. This high-speed CAN interface device has 7 input and output trigger lines and one input or output clock line which can be used to generate clock signals or use an external clock signal to synchronize connected modules or ECUs.
All the lines are TTL-compatible with a high input impedance during the ON state of the device. The module responds to the rising edge of the clock allowing it to perform counting functions and other time-related measurements. This module comes with an NXP TJA1041 or TJA1043 Transiever and has a baud rate of 1 Mbps allowing the 780683-02 device to communicate at a high speed to ensure efficient and quick data transfer.
To operate this module, it is recommended to install it in an environment with an ambient temperature between 0 degrees Celsius and 55 degrees Celsius to prevent overheating as the device does not come with a cooling fan but does feature a heatsink. The module can endure humidity levels of 10% to 90% RH but does not feature an IP protection rating to help protect the module from moisture or liquid splashes of any kind.
This module has port-to-ground as well as port-to-earth isolation of 500 Vrms verified by a 5 s dielectric withstand test and can also withstand a continuous 60 VDC, Measurement Category I. The 780683-02 module requires 640 mA of current to operate at 5 Volts DC or 940 mA at +3.3 Volts DC. The module has a compact design with dimensions of 10.67 cm x 16.76 cm (4.2 in. x 6.6 in.) and weights of 98 g for single port configuration and 102 g for 2 port configuration.
