Digilent Digital System Development Board for NI ELVIS III
The Digilent Digital System Development Board for NI ELVIS III (Part Number: 784972-01) is a powerful educational and development system that is FPGA-based, developed by Digilent for National Instruments. This add-on board is also specifically designed to interface with the NI Engineering Laboratory Virtual Instrumentation Suite (NI ELVIS III) and allows for hands-on learning in digital logic design, custom FPGA programming, and embedded systems design. Students and engineers can create and simulate circuits using LabVIEW FPGA or Multisim and do not have to learn complex hardware description languages such as VHDL or Verilog.
At the center of the board is the Xilinx Zynq-7020 All Programmable SoC, which consists of a dual-core ARM Cortex A9 processor, as well as Artix-7 FPGA programmable logic for more advanced work in the field of digital electronics. Also included on the board are 512 MB of DDR3 memory, 16 MB Quad-SPI flash memory, and a microSD slot for additional data storage and configuration. The board further hosts a 5" LCD touchscreen along with an OLED display, VGA and HDMI ports permitting instructive and interactive demonstrations of digital systems. Further features include Ethernet connectivity, USB-UART, and audio outputs, permitting an expansion of interfaces to computer or multimedia applications in classrooms or research facilities.
In addition to having a full complement of I/O interfaces provided on board such as Pmod connectors, an MXP interface, and an onboard breadboard provided for circuit prototyping, the board has eight various colored LED's, various slide switches and push button switches to allow for full interaction by the user with the programmed FPGA, while the direct interfacing with the NI ELVIS III allows for concurrent experimentation with both analog circuits and digital circuits. Power is provided through the NI ELVIS interface or else by use of a standalone 5 volt adapter, with power monitoring and power protection provided which results in reliable operation.
The Digilent Digital System Development Board for NI ELVIS III has been used widely in university laboratories, in the teaching of engineering courses, and in simulation of industrial automation courses. It provides a complete hands-on platform for teaching a combined curriculum for FPGA design, digital system implementations, and embedded programming, giving students perspective on the theoretical learning of devices taught in the classroom and the practical utilization of such hardware designed in practice, all in the same environment.
