National Instruments 68M-50F Cable Adapter
National Instruments’ 68M-50F (Part numbers 184670-01, 184670-02) is a data acquisition and digital I/O system cable adapter that serves as a unique interface in NI’s M Series and other instrument families to map signals between different connector types. As a primary function, the 68M-50F cable adapters allow users to transmit both analog and digital signals from an instrument’s 68-pin connector to the smaller 50-pin connector that is typical of many terminal blocks and accessory cables, and therefore enables users to properly route all signals through the correct pins of an instrument to achieve accurate measurements and/or controls.
The 184670-01, also called the standard MIO Cable Adapter, is designed to be connected to the primary I/O connector, identified as Connector 0, on many NI DAQ boards. In most cases, the standard MIO Cable Adapter will provide users with the initial signal mapping required to support the first bank of analog input channels, analog output channels and digital I/O ports. The 184670-02, referred to as the Extended I/O Cable Adapter, is designed to work with NI instruments that have a secondary connector, or Connector 1, and provides users with an extended signal mapping capability to include higher numbered analog input channels and additional digital port lines. The availability of two adapters (the standard and extended) enables users to configure their system to increase their total channel count and capabilities.
In order to properly configure the adapters, it is necessary to know the signal mapping for each type of adapter since the signal mapping for the extended I/O Cable Adapter is different than the standard MIO Cable Adapter. The adapters are used by engineers to provide a means of connecting high-performance National Instruments data acquisition cards into custom test stations, industrial automation systems, and laboratory measurement configurations. The 68M-50F adapters provide a reliable method of making connections to terminals that can either be screwed onto or attached using a breadboard, thereby allowing the user to accurately route signals associated with applications including, but not limited to, sensor data logging and automated process controls. The design of the 68M-50F adapters addresses the fundamental requirement for connector compatibility in commercial electronic instrumentation.
