National Instruments TNT4882 GPIB Interface Controller
The National Instruments TNT4882 (Part Number(s): TNT4882-BQF66, TNT4882-BQF330) is a general-purpose interface bus controller that has been engineered for industrial automation applications, tests, and measurement systems. The controller is a single-chip turbo performance-enhanced ASIC, a NAT4882 IEEE 488.2 controller, and sixteen IEEE-488 compliant transceivers in a single monolithic circuit. It is a complete GPIB interface that may be connected directly to the GPIB bus, thereby reducing the complexity of board design and increasing the reliability of the system. This device can handle all the standard functions of the IEEE 488.1 interface and also meets the extra requirements of IEEE 488.2, making it compatible with all types of programmable instruments available today.
The TNT4882 is engineered to be flexible so that it can meet the diverse needs of software developers. There are several different internal architectures provided within the TNT4882 to accommodate the diversity of needs for software developers. When working with new designs, the one-chip mode will provide the highest level of performance. In this mode, the high-speed HS488 protocol may be used for data transfer at speeds up to 8 MB/second. To simplify the transition of legacy system interfaces to the TNT4882, there are two other internal architecture modes that will allow developers to emulate the registers of either the NEC µPD7210 or the TI TMS9914A controllers. Using these modes, developers will have the ability to move their legacy code to the TNT4882 with minimal changes.
The TNT4882 has several built-in capabilities that will assist the developer in achieving high-speed data transfer with a minimum amount of overhead on the CPU. These capabilities include FIFO (first-in-first-out) buffers and a sophisticated DMA (direct memory access) interface.
The capabilities of the TNT4882 will make it the ideal core component for developing GPIB interface cards for use with PCI, PXI, or ISA bus systems, as well as embedded controllers. The Interface Controller will handle the complex low-level bus handshaking, command processing, and data flow management; therefore, developers will be able to concentrate on application-level programming. Also, since the controller has built-in transceivers, adjustable data transfer speeds, and can automatically recognize when messages are finished, it will offer a strong, dependable, and efficient way to link computers to the flexible GPIB platform in challenging automated testing situations.
