National Instruments NAT9914 IEEE 488.2 Controller Chip
The National Instruments NAT9914 (Part Numbers: NAT9914BPLF-27, NAT9914BPDF-9) is an IEEE 488.2 controller chip designed to facilitate data communication between a processor and an IEEE 488 (GPIB) bus. It provides full Talker, Listener, and Controller capabilities to allow seamless control and cooperation of multiple instruments in automated test and measurement systems. The NAT9914 is provided as a RoHS-compliant, pin-compatible replacement for the TI TMS9914A for simple integration and improvement of system reliability and performance in both new and existing installed applications.
Designed for applications involved in demanding GPIB interfacing, the NAT9914 is in full compliance with the IEEE 488.1 and 488.2 standards. Thus, it is possible to achieve efficient data transfer and precise control of commands. Programmable data transfer rates with selectable T1 delays of 350 ns, 500 ns, 1.1 µs and 2.0 µs provide design flexibility in existing designs with diverse requirements as to speed. The NAT9914 controller is designed to be compatible with both the NEC µPD7210 and TI TMS9914A software environments. This completely expands the opportunities for use in old and new installations, the NAT9914 being adaptable without hardware redesign.
The NAT9914 features direct memory access (DMA) schemes for efficient data transfer, automatic End-of-String (E0S) detection, and intelligent message handling, which completely lines out attempts at data transfer in the absence of any active listener. Internal status registers and programmable clock rates of up to 20 MHz are passive features on the device to enhance throughput and minimize processor overhead. Its low-power, TTL-compatible design, implemented in CMOS techniques, enables it to lend itself readily to compact, high-efficiency circuit arrangements.
Common applications for the NAT9914 chip are in automated test equipment (ATE), data acquisition systems, and industrial control environments as the core communications interface for reliable and synchronous operation of instruments. Its combination of the simplicity of hardware, extended IEEE 488.2 functionality, and drop-in compatibility provides a reliable vehicle for both upgrading and maintaining GPIB-based automation systems.
