National Instruments NAT7210 IEEE 488.2 Controller Chip
The National Instruments NAT7210 (Part Number: NAT7210BMF-9) is a RoHS-compliant replacement for the NEC µPD7210 GPIB ASIC, with a 40-pin DIP package and fully registered and pin compatible. All designs that use the NAT7210 can stay the same because it works better with IEEE 488.2, making it easier to add to what is already there. The NAT7210 is a 488.2 controller which allows talker, listener and controller operation as specified in the ANSI/IEEE standards 488.1-1987 and 488.2-1987. It is useful for instrumentation systems and automated test equipment which require the GPIB (General Purpose Interface Bus) protocol for communication between computers and instruments.
The NAT7210 is a controller that controls all GPIB bus communications through command processing, data transfer and status feedback routines, which are performed using programmable registers. This supports operation of the programmable logic array chip in either the NEC µPD7210 compatibility mode or TI TMS9914A compatibility mode depending on the software invoked, giving maximum flexibility to the designer for implementing this chip. Various clock speeds of up to 20 MHz are programmable to allow easy adaptation to different designs. The chip has a DMA feature, automatic End-of-String and message detection and static interrupt status bits, which give improved system responsiveness. The NAT7210 processes all IEEE 488 commands and automatically interprets those defined as undefined in the IEEE 488.2 description and minimizes driver overhead by effectively eliminating all loss of data during the assertion of ATN.
The NAT7210 is suitable for application in industrial operating environments in activities that require assured reliable GPIB communications between computers and instruments, laboratory instrumentation as well as electronic test environments. The device has the following interface associated functions, SH1, AH1, T5/TE5, L3/LE3, SR1, RL1, PP1/PP2, DC1, DT1, and C1-C5 for controller operation. The NAT7210 is a CMOS TTL compatible device giving low power consumption and signals maintaining integrity.
The NAT7210 is very popular with engineers who wish to upgrade systems or design new instruments where GPIB protocol is required with IEEE 488.2 compliance and assistance in terms of the long-term product nature. The enhanced product functionality, performance scalability and handling of necessary communication with GPIB give a suitable choice for OEMs and users who wish to modernize their GPIB related equipment with minimum design modification.
