National Instruments PC-DIO-96/PnP ISA Digital I/O Card
The National Instruments PC-DIO-96/PnP is a very high-density Parallel Digital Input/Output Interface Card that is used on ISA Bus Computers. It has 96 programmable TTL-compatible I/O Channels. Therefore, this card is a versatile tool to use for Industrial Control and automated test applications. The 82C55A Programmable Peripheral Interface Chips are the heart of the PC-DIO-96/PnP’s operation. These four chips provide engineers the ability to configure their digital I/O lines to function in many different ways, based upon the requirements of each application. Additionally, the 82C53 Counter/Timer Chip generates precision timing signals and periodic interrupts, which increases the capability of the PC-DIO-96/PnP to perform in real-time.
Engineers use the PC-DIO-96/PnP to accomplish a wide variety of digital interfacing tasks. Examples of typical applications include controlling and monitoring industrial machinery, communicating with programmable logic controllers (PLCs), interfacing with instrument clusters with BCD readouts, and driving peripherals such as Centronics-compatible printers. A major advantage of the PC-DIO-96/PnP is that it is Plug and Play compliant. As a result of this feature, the installation of the PC-DIO-96/PnP in compatible systems is greatly simplified because the software will automatically handle the Base Address and Interrupt Configuration without requiring the user to manually set switches and jumpers. In addition, the Digital I/O Card includes a standard 100-pin male ribbon cable connector, which may be modified using accessory cables to connect the card to screw terminal blocks or custom cabling.
National Instrument’s (NI) extensive collection of programming and integration tools support programming and interfacing with the PC-DIO-96/PnP. A variety of tools are available from NI to aid in this; LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, and NI-DAQ driver software. These tools allow developers to develop complicated DAQ & control systems at the application level rather than the hardware level, greatly improving developer productivity. The DIO lines on the board may be set up for simple one-way transfer of data between the board and other devices or for more complex two-way "handshake" type data communications; which provide the required flexibility for use in developing applications based upon most common digital communication protocols. Due to its large channel count and reliability, the PC-DIO-96/PnP forms a basis for developing complex computer-based control & measurement systems used within laboratories, manufacturing environments and industrial processes.
