Agilent 3488A Switch/Control Unit
The 3488A is a Switch/Control Unit designed to simplify the process of signal switching for applications all the way from small R&D bench systems to big production test systems. This versatile unit was originally manufactured by HP and later supported by the manufacturer Agilent. As a result, newer versions of the device are found as an Agilent 3499A/B/C, which is capable of operation in either SCPI mode or “legacy 3488A mode.”
To switch modes, the user just needs to press “menu” and then turn the knob on the front panel until “HP 3488A MODE” is shown on the display, and then press enter. This user-friendly operation allows the unit to be backward compatible with legacy models!
The 3488A mode of the Agilent Switch/Control Unit offers plug-in support for all of the (4447XX) modules that the original model was compatible with. It also extends support to newer (N22XXX) modules, with the exception of the N2272A, N2276A/B, and N2282A. These compatible modules can be categorized into six classes according to their functions: including multiplexer, multifunction, optical, matrix, digital I/O, and general purpose relay.
The original / legacy version of the device has a maximum power consumption of 18 VA, with 6 VA of power consumption for the mainframe. The power for the main line voltages measures 86 - 132V (115V) and 195 - 250V (230V). In terms of the environmental specifications, the 3488A has an operating temperature range of 0°C - 55 °C (32°F - 130°F) and a storage temperature range spanning from -40°C - 75°C (-40°F - 165°F). The humidity range of the environment should be 95% when ranging from 0°C - 40°C (32°F - 104°F).
The physical dimensions of the legacy 3488A measure 89 mm x 425 mm x 292 mm (3.5 in x 16.75 in x 11.5 in) when the removable feet are not included. When the feet are included, the height increases from 89 mm (3.5 in) to 100mm (4 in). The mainframe alone weighs 5.0 kg (11.0 lbs). When filled with modules, the unit weighs a maximum of 8.5 kg (18.5 lbs).
