A versatile, automated test tool with precise measurement capabilities is the Keysight/Agilent 34970A Data Acquisition/Switch Unit. It houses a 6 1/2-digit, 22-bit digital multimeter in a three-slot mainframe to allow the measurement of a number of parameters without the need for external signal conditioning. The meter has eleven functions for measurement of temperature with thermocouples, RTDs, and thermistors, AC and DC voltage, resistance, frequency and period, and AC and DC current. The channels are independent, and the unit can be made user-defined according to the needs of environmental monitoring, process testing for manufacturing, characterization of components, and benchtop tests.
Designed to be convenient and adaptable, the 34970A possesses on-board RS232 and GPIB interfaces for easy incorporation into automated test systems. Through its modular nature, expansion can be achieved using eight switch and control plug-in modules available; therefore making the instrument adapt to future measurement demands. The internal digital multimeter, with its roots in a successful benchtop design, offers superior resolution with ultra-low noise and rapid scan rates of up to 250 channels per second. A 50,000-reading nonvolatile memory store maintains important information even in the case of power failure.
Ease of setup real-time monitoring, and data analysis are offered via an intelligent front panel and accompanying BenchLink Data Logger 3 software, with greatly reduced setup time. Additional capabilities include single-channel alarm limits, user-specified scaling functions, and an on-board real-time clock enabling the user to have total control of test conditions.
