Keysight/Agilent 34946A Microwave Switch Module
The Keysight/Agilent 34946A is a double single-pole, double-throw (SPDT) terminated microwave switch module, carefully designed for signal routing at high-frequency in automated testing setups. Incorporated in the 34980A Multifunction Switch/Measure Unit, this module allows for bidirectional signal switching for testing across a DC to 26.5 GHz frequency range, thus making it suitable for testing involving transmitters and receivers for multiple bands. The setup consists of two independent Agilent N1810TL terminated switches for 3-ports, optimized specifically for being impedance-matched using 50-ohm terminations for signal reflection and ensuring a low voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR).
The 34946A is available in 4 GHz, 20 GHz, or 26.5 GHz configurations and features good isolation as well as little insertion loss, features required for signal integrity in demanding RF and microwave applications. It can accommodate power up to 50W, making it suitable for use in high-power conditions, like in radar systems or in verifying communication systems. The connections are accessed via SMA connectors on the front-panel and are marked in three-digit numbers for programmatic control via front-panel interfaces or a web-based interface.
The module includes an alternative for mounting external switches (Option 001) featuring a cable kit for use in mounting two compatible switches outside the chassis. The flexibility allows for user configuration without compromising on compliance to safety and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards. A confirmation functionality ensures reliability in operation through confirmation of switch status after each route command, but this is at the expense of adding latency to the processes involved in switching. Designed for use in flexible microwave switching, the 34946A excels in situations requiring precise signal path switches, especially source selection for testing multiple units or back calibration procedures in-loop. On the other hand, the 34947A is improved in channel density but does not have integrated terminations, making the 34946A better suited for situations involving sensitive impedance constraints. It is also compatible with Agilent switches N1810TL and N1811TL and works efficiently in complex switching matrices.
