ADLINK PXI-8750 Expansion Interface Card
ADLINK’s PXI-8750 is a PXI and CompactPCI expansion card designed to develop flexible and expandable PXI and CompactPCI-based systems. The PXI-8750 acts as a fast, transparent bridge between two different PCI buses; this allows for the remote control of either a PXI or CompactPCI backplane using a host computer as the master controller. The primary application for this product is to enable the creation of multiple-chassis systems to allow one host controller to access and control instrumentation and I/O modules that are installed in individual enclosures. This is critical for applications that require more slots than are available within a single backplane or have to have the measurement equipment physically isolated from the control equipment.
Using the StarFabric architecture and low voltage differential signaling (LVDS) technology, the PXI-8750 creates a reliable and high bandwidth serial connection between two chassis. This connection has a full duplex rate of 528 Mb/sec; which is enough bandwidth to support the entire bandwidth of a 64-bit 66 MHz PCI bus. A full-duplex connection is used so the data transfer can occur simultaneously on both ends of the cable. Shielded twisted pair copper cables are used to connect the two chassis together, allowing for up to ten meters of cable length before the signal degrades. Having the ability to use long lengths of cable allows the user to locate the measurement equipment in areas that would be difficult to get to, such as inside of machines or in areas that are hazardous to humans.
The PXI-8750 is used extensively in many of the industry's leading-edge technologies, including industrial automation, electronic manufacturing test systems, and high-density data acquisition systems. One of the major advantages of the Expansion Interface Card is its transparent operation. This feature is advantageous because the PXI-8750 does not operate in conjunction with the operating system and therefore requires no additional drivers to function. This makes all devices on the remote backplanes appear as if they were connected locally to the host machine. In addition, by providing multi-backplane configurations in a star or daisy chain topology, the PXI-8750 offers a flexible method to create large ATE systems. Engineers can now easily add significant amounts of I/O capability to their systems while maintaining the highest level of flexibility required to meet the needs of very demanding applications.
