ADLINK PXI-8570 PXI Extension Module
The ADLINK PXI-8570 is a unique type of PXI-to-PXI extension card used to create multi-chassis PXI and CompactPCI systems. It acts like a PCI-to-PCI bridge and allows the host computer or a primary PXI chassis to control and communicate with devices on one or two secondary extension chassis. All of the remote cards appear to the host as part of a single local PCI bus; therefore, the system complexity is greatly simplified by removing the need for multiple PCI buses and thus making software development much easier. This configuration is required for any application that needs more slots than a single chassis can provide or if the test/measure hardware cannot be located near the control computer.
Utilizing the StarFabric switched serial interconnect, the PXI-8570 has a high-speed, low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS), full duplex connection via shielded twisted pair (STP) copper cable that allows for a very robust link. This technology offers a bandwidth of 2.5 Gbps full duplex and therefore supports the maximum data transfer rate of a 64-bit, 66 MHz PCI bus at 528 MB/s. The length of this serial link can be extended as far as 10 m, allowing the user much flexibility when laying out their system. Additionally, the module is fully compliant with key standards of PCI, CompactPCI and PXI to allow users to utilize a wide range of compatible hardware and software; furthermore, the module operates totally transparent to the operating system, BIOS, and device drivers and does not require any additional software to function properly.
The PXI-8570 is a typical example of modules used to construct a high-density I/O system for a large-scale automation application. It can also be utilized to create an electronic manufacturing test system and/or deploy a test stand within a harsh industrial environment that will place the control PC in a safe location. The ability of this module to support a multi-chassis PXI system offers the user a scalable option to expand their instrument slot count. The ability of the module to seamlessly pass through PCI interrupts and operate independently of the host OS makes this module a reliable and flexible part of a larger, complex industrial integration system.
